"son" is the short word for "sonic" as in the word 'son'g.....

so, son is the one who carries the family sonics in the genes and, if the son performs penance enhancing his sonic* frequency, therefore, it enhances the sonics of the family genes.....

no wonder, son in sanātan is called the kul-tāran (कुल तारण) means the one who can liberate the whole lineage of fore-fathers.....

and, guru is the one who holds the power to enhance sonics of many lineages.....

*sonic means sounds.....

to shed more light:
the word song is code son-g; "son" is sonic and "g" is gravity & generator..... therefore, the word song means the generator of gravitational sonics, which are the original sound/sonic codes of creation.....
